Validation of the hybrid turbulence model in detailed thermal-hydraulic analysis code SPIRAL for fuel assembly using sodium experiments data of 37-pin bundles

In the study of safety enhancement on advanced sodium-cooled fast reactor, it is essential to clarify the thermal-hydraulics under various operation conditions in a fuel assembly (FA) with the wire-wrapped fuel pins to assess the structural integrity of the fuel pin. A finite element thermal-hydraulics analysis code named SPIRAL has been developed to analyze the detailed thermal-hydraulics phenomena in a FA. In this study, the numerical simulations of the 37-pin bundle sodium experiments at different Re number conditions, including a transitional condition between laminar and turbulent flows and turbulent flow conditions, were performed to validate the hybrid turbulence model equipped in SPIRAL. The temperature distributions predicted by SPIRAL was consistent with those measured in the experiments. Through the validation study, the applicability of the hybrid turbulence model in SPIRAL to thermal-hydraulic evaluation of sodium-cooled FA in the wide range of Re number was confirmed.

Computer codes for irradiation behavior analysis of a fuel pin and a fuel pin bundle and for coolant thermal hydraulics analysis were coupled into an integrated code system. In the system, each code provides data required by other codes and the analyzed results are shared among them. The system allows for the synthesizing of analyses of thermal, chemical and mechanical behaviors in a fuel subassembly under irradiation. A test analysis was made for a fuel subassembly containing a mixed oxide fuel pin bundle irradiated in a fast reactor. The results of the analysis were presented with transverse cross-sectional images of the fuel subassembly and three-dimensional images of a fuel pin and fuel pin bundle models. For detailed evaluation, various irradiation behaviors of all fuel pins in the subassembly were analyzed and correlated with irradiation conditions.

Fully natural circulation decay heat removal systems (DHRSs) are to be adopted for sodium fast reactors, which is a passive safety feature without any electrical pumps. It is required to grasp the thermal-hydraulic phenomena in the reactor vessel and evaluate the coolability of the core under the natural circulation not only for the normal operating condition but also for severe accident conditions. In this paper, the numerical results of the preliminary analysis for the sodium experimental condition with the PLANDTL-2 are discussed to establish an appropriate numerical models for the reactor core including the gap region among the subassemblies and the DHX. From these preliminary analyses, the characteristics of the thermal-hydraulics behavior in the PLANDTL-2 to be focused are extracted.

Effect of coolant water temperature of ECCS on failure probability of RPV

For reactor pressure vessel (RPV) of pressurized water reactor, temperature of coolant water in emergency core cooling system (ECCS) may have influence on the structural integrity of RPV during pressurized thermal shock (PTS) events. Focusing on a mitigation measure to raise the coolant water temperature of ECCS for aged RPVs in order to reduce the effect of thermal shock due to PTS events, we performed thermal hydraulic analyses and probabilistic fracture mechanics analyses by using RELAP5 and PASCAL4, respectively. From the analysis results, it was shown that the failure probability of RPV was dramatically reduced when the coolant temperature in accumulator as well as high and low pressure injection systems (HPI/LPI) was raised, although raising the coolant temperature of HPI/LPI only did not cause reduction in the failure probability.

Thermal-hydraulic analyses of the High-Temperature engineering Test Reactor for loss of forced cooling at 30% reactor power

The HTTR, which is the only HTGR having inherent safety features in Japan, conducted a safety demonstration test involving a loss of both reactor reactivity control and core cooling. The paper shows thermal-hydraulics during the LOFC test at an initial power of 30% reactor power (9 MW), when the insertion of all control rods was disabled and all gas circulators were tripped to reduce the coolant flow rate to zero. The analytical results could show that the downstream of forced convection caused by the HPS pushes down the upstream by natural convection in the fuel assemblies; however, the forced convection has little influence on the core thermal-hydraulics without the reactor outlet coolant temperature. As a result, the three-dimensional thermal-phenomena inside the RPV during the LOFC test could be understood qualitatively.

Evaluation of sodium pool fire and thermal consequence in two-cell configuration

Evaluation of accidental sodium leak, combustion, and its thermal consequence is one of the important issues to be assessed in the field of sodium-cooled fast reactor (SFR). The present paper deals with the sodium pool fire and subsequent heat transfer behavior in air atmosphere two-cell geometry both experimentally and analytically because such two-cell configuration is considered as a typical one to possess important characteristic of multi-compartment system seen in an actual plant. As a result of the numerical analysis using a lumped-parameter based zonal model safety analysis code SPHINCS, the applicability of the ventilation model implemented in SPHINCS has been demonstrated. It is also investigated that the buoyancy- driven ventilation is dominant in the experiment.

Analyses of deformation and thermal-hydraulics within a wire-wrapped fuel subassembly in a liquid metal fast reactor by the coupled code system

The coupled numerical analysis of mechanical and thermal behaviors was performed for a wire-wrap fuel pin bundle subassembly irradiated in a fast reactor. For the analysis, the fuel pin bundle deformation analysis code BAMBOO and the thermal hydraulics analysis code ASFRE exchanged the deformation and temperature analysis results through the iterative calculations to attain convergence corresponding to the static balance between deformation and temperature. The analysis by the coupled code system showed that radial distribution of coolant temperatures in a subassembly tended to be flattened as a result of the fuel pin bundle deformation governed by cladding void swelling and irradiation creep. Such temperature distribution was slightly analyzed as a result of the small bowing of the fuel pins due to the cladding-wire interaction even when no bundle-duct interaction occurred. The effect of the spacer wire-pitch on deformation and thermal hydraulics was also investigated in this study.

A sodium-water coupled thermal-hydraulics simulation code TSG has been developed for numerical estimation of three-dimensional thermal-hydraulic phenomena in the straight-tube steam generator. The water analysis module was developed by using the parallel channel model of heat transfer tubes, and the sodium analysis module was developed by using porous body approach. As the first step of validation, simulation results by TSG were compared with the measured data of 1MWt SG experiments under steady state conditions. Through the numerical simulation, the coupled simulation method used in TSG was validated and applicability of TSG to simulate thermal-hydraulics of the straight tube SG in the steady state was confirmed.

Thermal hydraulic behavior in a lead-bismuth cooled accelerator driven system (ADS) is analyzed under normal operation condition. Input data for the ADS version of J-TRAC code have been constructed to integrate the conceptual design. The core part of the ADS is modeled in detail to evaluate the core radial power profile effect on the core cooling. As the result of the analyses, the followings are found; (1) Both maximum clad temperature and fuel temperature are below the design limits. (2) The radial power profile has little effect on the coolant flow distribution among fuel assemblies. (3) The radial power profile has little effect on the heat transfer coefficients along fuel rods. (4) The thermal hydraulic behaviors along four steam generators are identical. The thermal hydraulic behaviors along two pumps are also identical. A fast running input data is developed by the simplification of the detailed input data based on the findings mentioned above.

Decay heat removal by natural circulation is a significant passive safety measure of a fast reactor against station blackout. The decay heat removal system (DHRS) of the loop type sodium fast reactor being designed in Japan comprises a direct reactor auxiliary cooling system and primary reactor auxiliary cooling system (PRACS). The thermal hydraulic phenomena in the plant under natural circulation conditions need to be understood for establishing a reliable natural circulation driven DHRS. In this study, sodium experiments were conducted using a plant dynamic test loop to understand the thermal-hydraulic phenomena considering natural circulation in the plant. The experiments simulating the scram transient confirmed that PRACS started up smoothly under natural circulation, and the simulated core was stably cooled after the scram. Moreover, the experiments varying the pressure loss coefficients of the loop as the experimental parameters showed robustness of the PRACS.

Some auxiliary cooling systems to remove the decay heat of the core are under consideration for a sodium-cooled fast reactor, and two of the typical systems are primary reactor auxiliary cooling system (PRACS) and direct reactor auxiliary cooling system (DRACS). In this study, sodium experiments were conducted in order to confirm the applicability of the PRACS and DRACS under a situation assuming the severe accidents with core melting. The plant dynamics test loop was used for these experiments, which contains a simulated core, the PRACS and DRACS. The core melt situation is simulated by shutting off the inlet of subassemblies (S/A). The experimental results revealed the cooling process of the partially/completely inactive S/A and confirmed the long-term heat removal by the PRACS/DRACS.
